Too many of us have come to think of the ‘good life’ in purely materialistic terms, and have allowed the means of acquiring material security, even wealth, to become ends. We no longer seek to organize our lives according to what’s Good, True, and Beautiful, but by a kind of shopping-mall utilitarianism that allows us to call good whatever allows us to grow wealthier.
